02.07.10

David Villa brought an end to all dreams of Portugal and secured Spain’s place in the quarter finals with a 1-0 win on Tuesday 29th June at the FIFA world cup 2010.
It was a match worth watching with both sides trying their level best to outnumber the other. Spain started off very strongly and was in control of the game, though Portugal was equally tight at the back and it was not easy for Spain to score. Till half time both the teams were 0-0.

The impressive Eduardo was in great form and had an unblemished record, but it was spoiled by David Villa on Tuesday evening. The great Portugal goalkeeper just couldn’t stop Villa’s ball from entering the net in the 63rd minute; the only goal in this match which sent Spain to qualify for the quarter finals. Portugal did get a number of opportunities to score but just couldn’t get better of Spain, as they had a much better control of the ball. Carlos was quick to admit this, though he was also of the opinion that Portuguese fans should not be disappointed with their team since they had put up an honorable performance and will leave the field with their heads high.

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz did conclude on Tuesday that Spain was a far better team and deserved to stay on in the World Cup. But again he was not ashamed of his players as they had put up a good fight. Now Portugal will have to wait another four years to prove themselves and make a mark in international football. As far as Cristiano Ronaldo is concerned, he was an individual player who had a consistent performance throughout the tournament until now and had shown some excellent action, but it was not enough. He left the field quietly after Tuesday’s match without speaking to the media.

Now Spain will play against Paraguay on 3rd July Saturday, and it will be a clash of the titans. We might see more of Fernando Torres, who was replaced with Joseba Llorente in the second half of the match, to give some rest to his injured legs. But he did his bit to take Spain to the quarter finals.

Brazil wins 3-0 against Chile

29.06.10

Brazil shows a convincing win against South Americans Chile to challenge the Netherlands next:

Brazil advanced to the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup 2010 with ease beating Chile 3-0. Though Chile had a very good start with Humberto Suazo showing some smart moves; Brazil pinned them back on the defensive within a few minutes. It was a remarkable header from Juan that opened the score for Brazil. The powerful header from Juan was smartly received by Luis Fabiano who slotted the ball into an empty net. And then it was Kaka, who delivered a beautiful pass to Fabiano again, who collected it before easing past Claudio Bravo and shooting it into an empty net.

This was a big setback for Chile who started losing their confidence as well as concentration. And then the third and final goal came in a similar fashion, and this time it was Ramires who left his defensive duties and strode off with the ball before parting it to teammate Robinho, who shot it past Bravo into the net. And Chile was completely outclassed!

Will Brazil be the champions for the sixth time in the FIFA world cup 2010? This is the question on everyone’s mind as Brazil took another big stride towards the title. Brazilian coach Dunga is very hopeful about his team though the five times world champion will face a stiffer competition on 2nd July against the Dutch at Port Elizabeth.
