Ronnie Boyce's nickname was 'Ticker' because he was the heartbeat of the great 1960s Hammer team. Geoff Hurst described Ronnie as: "A player's player and a tremendous worker, but people do not appreciate his value to the team."
A West Ham apprentice at 17, Ronnie soon progressed to the first team. By 1962, he was a regular, playing alongside the likes of Johnny Byrne, John Sissons, Geoff Hurst and, of course, Bobby Moore. That famous Cup run had seen the Hammers defeat Manchester United in the semis at Hillsborough with Ronnie scoring a brace. Further success was to follow as the Hammers won their first European trophy the following year, beating TSV Munich 1860 in the European Cup Winners Cup.
After his playing days ended, Ronnie continued his love affair with his boyhood club, serving West Ham in many capacities in the next two decades. For Hammer fans, he will always be remembered as the match winner who brought home their first major trophy.
